The Endless Steppe by Esther Hautzig

This memoir about the author's life in Siberia during World War II is hard to put down. Esther and her family were arrested in Poland and exiled to Siberia where they remained until the war ended. Unprepared for the bitter climate and harsh realities of being forced to live in a land where they knew no one and couldn't speak the language, this is a story of survival and strength. This book will give you insight into an often untold story of World War II, its victims, and the hardships they endured.

Dawning Spring

Snowdrops tentatively poke their
shy heads through the
thin
layer of snow
that is melting quickly
to give way to the
vibrant green
grass

When the snowdrops
die
crocuses are glad to flourish
in the feeble sunlight
the last
of the snow

Skies clear
and daffodils grin at each other
inviting me in
but soon
they wither and droop

Sunlight blesses the horizon
kissing it
casting warm
light
on the
glittering dew
and unfurling leaves

Wisteria hangs
like grape bunches
snapdragons absorb
the light
lady slippers
prance on the
forest floor
using dainty little feet

The sun
sets
and the moon
rises
until tomorrow
when light
will shine
on the
wondrous
colors
of
dawning
spring.

Snow Forts

Big chunks of ice and snow
I build a wall
To protect and hide.

I roll snow
into balls,
A circular white mass
To destroy the enemy.

The mass flies
toward me,
coldness covers
my face.

I take the snow
And roll a ball
I take aim
and fire.
The enemy is cold too.

Sadness

Sadness is blank,
Like the hole in your heart.
And the pain in your stomach.
Sadness is the mother of all emotions.
You feel it,
Others will feel it.
It gets carried around by one soul
Carried by one and onto the next.

Writers Block

I rummage through
the file cabinets of my mind
seeking inspiration,
but finding none
the barren white paper
seems to mock me
"C'mon, aren't you going to write anything?"
But no, I'm not,
because I have writers block!
